The Taurus company is known for its affordable double-action revolvers and semi-automatic handguns. Single-action, traditionally styled revolvers also have a small place in Taurus’ history. The company offered its first single-action with the Gaucho in 2005, though the model was discontinued two years later. New for 2024, Taurus is bringing back a centerfire, single-action revolver with the Deputy, a handgun that combines traditional aesthetics and features with modern safety features.
With the Deputy, Taurus is re-introducing a single-action to its line-up of revolvers.
Taurus USA’s Deputy has the lines and features of the classic Single Action Army revolver. It is single-action only, with a solid frame that requires loading cartridges one at a time through the frame’s loading gate and removing empties with a barrel-mounted ejector rod. The action of the Deputy combines the characteristics of the traditional Single Action Army revolver and a Ruger New Model revolver.
The hammer has the traditional four notches, which results in the four clicks that traditionalists like when working the action. The cylinder rotates freely at the half-cock notch. The Deputy uses a non-traditional frame-mounted firing pin and transfer-bar system. This means that the Deputy has a modern safety system that allows the revolver to be carried with all chambers loaded and the hammer resting on a loaded chamber.
Deputy revolvers are available chambered in either .45 Colt or .357 Magnum. They have a blued finish and are available with barrels in the traditional Single-Action Army lengths of 4.75” or 5.5”. Grips are two-piece checkered polymer.
The action of the Deputy combines a traditional four-position hammer with a modern transfer-bar safety.
The all-steel Deputy, chambered in .45 Colt with a 5.5” barrel, weighs 38.2 ozs. The smaller holes of the bore and chambers in the .357 model render it about 3.5 ozs. heavier.
