The FN 509 is a modern handgun design developed for the U.S. Army’s Modular Handgun System (MHS) program. While the 509 wasn’t the winner of that competition, it has lived up to its modularity claims, with 18 versions of the 9 mm Luger 509 now available, along with models based on the same platform and chambered in .45 ACP and 10 mm Auto. In 2021, FN introduced the competition-focused 509 Edge LS, a pistol with unique aesthetics and features, followed by the concealed-carry-optimized 509 CC Edge a year later. New for 2024, FN is offering a slightly larger version of the 509 CC Edge with the CC Edge XL.
The FN 509 CC Edge XL demonstrates the modularity of FN’s striker-fired 509 design.
The basic features of the new pistol follow those of the original 509 CC Edge. Its 4.2” cold-hammer-forged, stainless-steel barrel has a titanium-nitride PVD finish and a quick-detachable compensator that FN claims reduces muzzle flip by 25 percent. The stainless-steel slide uses the distinctive lightening cuts found on other Edge models and has a graphite PVD finish. Sights are a front post with a fiber-optic insert and a rear notch that are of a height that will co-witness with an electronic optic. The slide is cut for optic mounting, a variety of which can be fitted through FN’s optics-plate system.
The FN 509 CC Edge XL uses the muzzle compensator and lightened slide of the 509 CC Edge.
While the 509 CC Edge has a compact grip that houses a 12-round or extended 15-round magazine, the CC Edge XL has a full-size grip that accommodates a 17-round magazine. The grip has a built-in magwell and this feature, along with weighted base plates on the magazine, increase reloading speed. Like other Edge models, the CC XL uses FN’s flat-faced trigger system.
The compensator used on FN 509 Edge models is quick detachable for cleaning and maintenance.
